VNS Therapy for Pharmacoresistant Epilepsy

What to expect with VNS Therapy

In terms of Seizure Relief:

VNS Therapy reduces seizure frequency in most cases. Some patients have reported dramatic reductions, others report a slight reduction, and a further group reports no reduction.

According to doctors using VNS Therapy as part of their patients’ long-term treatment therapy, one third of the patients treated experience a dramatic improvement in seizure control, one third experience a good improvement and one third experience little or no improvement. However, people with little or no improvement in seizure reduction may report improvements in their quality-of-life benefits over time.

Studies have shown that the positive effects of VNS Therapy typically do not wear off; in fact they can improve over time.

In terms of Quality of Life Benefits:

In addition to experiencing fewer and less severe seizures, many VNS Therapy patients, their family and doctors also report improvements in mood, increased alertness, improvements in verbal skills, memory and school achievements. Some patients and doctors report a reduction in the number and/or doses of medications over time, and VNS Therapy patients have been reported to make fewer visits to the hospital after they have been treated with VNS Therapy.

In terms of Side Effects:

Because it is not a drug, VNS Therapy may reduce seizures without the side effects associated with antiepileptic medication. VNS Therapy does not cause typical medication side effects such as confusion, weight gain, tiredness, sleeplessness or low energy.

Some people report side effects but usually they are very minor — more inconvenient than incapacitating. The most common side effects of VNS Therapy generally occur only during stimulation periods, when the device is sending the tiny pulses, and include hoarseness (your voice that sounds croaky), a prickling feeling on the skin, shortness of breath and a dry cough. The good news is these side effects usually diminish over time.

Patients tolerate VNS Therapy extremely well, even young children. Most patients show this preference by deciding to replace their device when the battery runs out.
