Alisus®
Intravascular Temperature Management Current Clinical Indications
Neuro
Reduction of Fever in the Neuro ICU:
Neurointensive care clinicians aggressively attempt to reduce fever
in patients with severe neuronal injury including those who have
suffered intracerebral hemorrhage, subarrachnoid hemorrhage,
ischemic stroke and traumatic brain injury. Current techniques of
antipyretic therapy and surface cooling have limited effects and are
labour intensive.
Alsius®
studied the Cool Line / CoolGuard 3000® system in 296 Neuro ICU
patients. The Alsius® technology reduced fever by 64% when used as
an adjunct to conventional fever management techniques.
Aneurysm Surgery:
Recent clinical trials have shown an improve neurological benefit
and improved discharge status in patients who had been cooled to
32-34°C during surgical clipping of ruptured cerebral aneurysms.
Alsius® catheters provide a powerful solution to improved
cooling/rewarm during neurosurgical aneurysm repair.
Emerging Applications:
Hypothermia therapy shows great promise in improving outcome for
Neuro ICU patients that have suffered traumatic brain injury and
stroke. Alsius® is currently supporting several investigations using
the Icy Catheter to induce and reverse hypothermia in these patient
populations.
Cardiac
Cardiac Arrest:
The use of hypothermia therapy has been shown in recent studies to
reduce mortality and improve long-term neurological deficit in
patients who have suffered cardiac arrest. The International Liaison
Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) has included the use of
therapeutic hypothermia as a Level 1 guideline.
Alsius Corporation is sponsoring the CoolHeart Registry with the
European Resuscitation Council to examine clinical practice patterns
using the Icy Catheter to induce hypothermia therapy in patients who
have been resuscitated from cardiac arrest. To learn more about the
